When to.....

Lock in your Photographer

If you fall in love with a photographer, book them as soon as you can — especially if your wedding falls on a popular date or long weekend (think 06.06.2026!)

Many photographers book 12–18 months in advance, and my calendar typically fills around the 12-month mark and I'm already booking for 2027 & 2028!

If you are getting married in the next year and haven't yet locked me in, please reach out and I'll gladly confirm availability or recommend another photographer to reach out to.

Secure your Venue

Your venue sets the date, the vibe and often the entire flow of your wedding day, so this should be one of your first bookings. Popular venues can book out 12–24 months ahead, particularly for peak seasons and weekend dates.

If you're open to a weekday booking, you should have a better chance of securing your date and a good deal.

Arrange your catering

Once your venue is secured, catering should follow soon after — especially if you’re using an external caterer. Great food vendors are in high demand, so aim to lock this in 10–18 months before your wedding where possible.

Vendors like Creative Cater are so amazing, you'll want to lock them down the minute you have a date in mind.

Connect with your Celebrant

Your celebrant plays a huge role in setting the tone of your ceremony, so take time to find someone whose personality matches yours. Many celebrants book 12+ months ahead, and early booking also allows plenty of time to plan a meaningful, personalised ceremony.

Some celebrants also offer additional services, such as decor, photobooth hire, DJ or MC so be sure to enquire about their additional services!

Find the Perfect Dress

Wedding gowns often require ordering, alterations and multiple fittings, so start shopping 8-12 months before your wedding. This allows plenty of time for delivery, tailoring and avoiding last-minute stress.

If you're like me, and your body weight fluctuates significantly, you may want to discuss it with your bridal boutique as they will surely recommend particular gowns to opt for (such as a lace up) and the best timeframe to order your dress.

Book Everything Else

Once the big pieces are locked in, it’s time to secure your dream team — DJs, MCs, florists, makeup artists, hair stylists, nail artists and other styling vendors. Aim to book these 6–12 months in advance, especially for peak wedding dates.

Planning getting you down?

Let me help! I've gone ahead and made up a spreadsheet to help you keep track of all your bookings and to help you stick to your budget. In my excel spreadsheet, you can record the deposits you've paid and see your total balance owing. There is also space for important notes and adding in additional vendors if I've forgotten anyone.

Visual aids like this help to ensure you don't double book services and can stick to your budget.

Gee, thanks Gab! You're such a life saver! (Yeah, I know).

Tips for.....

Choosing your Venue

Start by determining your budget, as this will guide your options. Include not just the venue rental fee, but also costs for catering, decor, and any additional services. Next, consider your guest list; it’s essential to find a venue that can comfortably accommodate everyone you want to invite and is accessible for them (e.g. wheelchair/prams).

Additionally, think about the style and theme of your wedding—whether you envision a rustic barn, an elegant gazebo, or a beachfront ceremony. Your ceremony location may differ from your reception so consider the distance between them when booking both.

Once you have a few places in mind, check their availability for your desired date. Popular venues tend to book up quickly, so it’s wise to start this process early. Be sure to ask about the amenities they offer, such as tables, chairs, and parking, as these can simplify your planning and potentially save you money.

Finally, if possible, visit the venues in person. Touring the space allows you to get a feel for its atmosphere and helps you envision your special day. While you’re there, ask questions about any restrictions they might have regarding vendors or decor. Also, consider the weather if you’re thinking about an outdoor venue as having a backup plan is essential.

Taking the time to evaluate these factors will help ensure you find the perfect venue for your wedding day.

Selecting a Celebrant

When choosing your wedding celebrant, start by identifying the style of ceremony you envision—formal, casual, or uniquely personal. This will help you narrow down potential celebrants who align with your vision.

Research their qualifications and experience, looking for registered officiants with a solid track record. Reading reviews and testimonials can provide valuable insights into their professionalism and style.

Once you have a few options, schedule a consultation to discuss your wedding plans and share your vision. This meeting is crucial for gauging their personality and communication style, as feeling comfortable with your celebrant is essential. Inquire about how they can personalise your ceremony, including readings, rituals, custom vows, and ask about their process for writing the script and conducting any rehearsals.

Check their availability for your wedding date, as popular celebrants can book up quickly. Discuss fees and packages to ensure they fit within your budget and understand what’s included in their services. Trust your instincts and choose someone you connect with.

Also be sure to have them read out your full names to ensure they pronounce them correctly. By taking these steps, you’ll ensure a memorable and meaningful ceremony that reflects your love story.

Picking your Catering Style

Your catering style helps shape the entire reception vibe.

Grazing tables and canapés create a relaxed, social atmosphere, while feasting menus and banquets encourage shared dining and connection.

Plated or alternative drop meals feel more formal and structured, while festival-style setups, bites and bars or food trucks bring a fun, interactive energy.

Think about how you want guests to mingle, move and experience the night — not just what’s on the menu.

Finding the dress of your dreams

Start early and keep an open mind — many brides fall in love with something completely different from what they first imagined.

We’re lucky to have amazing local boutiques offering a wide range of gowns to try on, along with talented designers like Kelly Jasmine Bridal, who can custom-create something truly unique.

Focus on how you feel in the dress, not just how it looks on the hanger.

Personalising your Wedding Portraits

Your portraits should feel like you.

Feel free to incorporate activities or details that reflect your relationship — whether that’s fishing together, gaming, sharing a picnic, popping champagne, taking celebratory shots or even skulling your favourite drink side by side.

It won't take long to whip out a fishing rod and pretend to reel in the catch of your life, or pose together holding a d20.

The more personal the moment, the more natural and meaningful your photos will feel.

Achieving that perfect glow

Great wedding-day skin starts well before the big day.

Prioritise hydration, consistent skincare and treatments that work for your skin type — my personal go-to is the Dr Melaxin Peel Shot for a smooth, oil and blackhead-free complexion.

If you choose a spray tan, avoid overly warm or orange base tones, as they can photograph unevenly and clash with whites and neutrals.
